Event: How to conciliate biodiversity and development in protected areas?

To what extent can protected areas help conserve biodiversity while contributing to the socio-economic development of local populations? The FFEM and AFD will present on Monday 13 the results of a project evaluation that provides some answers to this complex debate.
Combining biodiversity conservation and development is a central concern of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). However, the means to achieve this are still being debated.
This meeting will aim to highlight the issues at stake in the management of protected areas, as well as the means of combining biodiversity conservation and development. It will also be an opportunity to present the results of the evaluation recently carried out on a panel of 19 projects in Latin America, Africa and Asia undertaken between 2000 and 2017 by AFD and the FFEM, in order to capitalize on the experience gained from these projects.
The debate on the results of the evaluation will be chaired by Marie-Christine CORMIER SALEM, Director of Research in Social Sciences at the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD), a specialist in environment-development issues in the South.
