A forum for conservation of the great apes

In November 2020, the Alliance for the Conservation of Great Apes in Central Africa (AGSAC) organised a forum around the topic of “Local initiatives to protect the great apes of the Cameroon forests and Congo basin” at Yaoundé in Cameroon. The Alliance is supported by the Small-scale Initiatives Programme (PPI), itself set up by the French Committee of the IUCN and funded by the FFEM.
The Alliance for the Conservation of Great Apes in Central Africa (AGSAC) organised the first forum on the community conservation of great apes, held on 18 and 19 November. This event brought to the fore local conservation initiatives set up by Cameroon civil society and the countries of Central Africa for the protection of the unique biodiversity found in the Congo basin forests. It formed a unique opportunity for NGOs, researchers and local conservation practitioners to get together and share their experiences. The forum was also a tool for advocating the preservation of biodiversity.
The Small-scale Initiatives Programme, which supports AGSAC, was founded by the French Committee of the IUCN and funded by the FFEM. It is the only tool of French cooperation funded directly by civil society organisations in the global south for specific conservation actions. Founded in 2006, the Programme funds regional practical projects for biodiversity conservation benefiting local populations.
